I’m coming at you today with another JHP Running Project athlete spotlight. Today’s athlete is Virginia Wallace from Fort Worth, Texas! Virginia is a relatively new client, as I’ve only been working with her for about two months now, but have appreciated getting to know her and have appreciated her constant communication and feedback in training! It happens to be a family affair with Virginia as I also get the opportunity to coach her husband, Chris Wallace!!!
In the short time that I’ve been coaching Virginia she has already run a PR in the 5000 meters with an 18:57 that she ran at the Dallas Marathon 5000 meters where she took 1st overall!!!

Her goal for running in 2019:
Become a strong and confident racer. I’d rather race smart and hard than get a PR. If a PR comes with it than more the better. In the past I’ve lacked confidence in my training which showed on race day. I want to know I can catch that girl & hit that fast mile split and just hang on to the end because I’ve trained for it.
What do you like best from my training program?
You give me a reason for each run of the day. Whether it’s a hard run or easy run, there is a purpose. I’ve barely started with the program but I can tell the confidence and history you have in your training to know where to start me even if you don’t quite know exactly my fitness level.
How did you come to work with me as a coach?
I heard about you through word of mouth. Once I moved to Fort Worth I got on the Cowtown Elite Women’s team where I reached out to them asking if they had recommendations for a coach. Esperanza sent me your information. I looked up your history and credentials, reasoned with your pricing & saw it is good fit for me.
What makes this investment so important to you?
I’ve never had a great coach that I can trust with my running. The only solid coach I had was in 2008 and she was only for one semester. Since then, I can see the comparison between someone who loves running & someone who just has the title of a coach for a job. This makes an impact on how an athlete approaches practice, the starting line & their overall view on running. Running is such a mental sport that you have to believe in your training and yourself to be a great runner. I’ve been hesitant to hire a coach because I just didn’t want to spend the money and I lacked a goal. Since joining the Cowtown Elite Women I’ve seen how hiring a coach can drive athletes to focus on their running and not the calculating. I want to break 18 in the 5k and I don’t know how to get there leading myself. I feel I left college unsatisfied with my experience and how good I could of been if I had a program that I believed in. Many athletes, including my husband, left my college team to go to a D1 school who had an amazing coach and they broke times I couldn’t even imagine at the program I was in. I need the guidance to get to be the best runner I can be. I can’t do it alone.
What are you most proud of this past year in your running?
Because of a lack of a goal and enthusiasm, I had ran on and off with no consistency for the past two years. One day I decided to stick to running 6 days a week for 4 weeks. I don’t remember the exact day I started to run consistently but it was sometime this past summer around July 4th. I had a terrible finish time at a 4th of July 5k and decided to start running consistently even if it’s a few miles a day.
One day I wanted do a tempo run. It wasn’t going to be pretty but I wanted to get some speed in. The time I set for myself was a 6:40-45 pace. I ended up going a 6:35 pace. I was elated because, 1. The average pace was faster than the 5k I had run 4 weeks earlier, 2. It showed me the power of consistency 3. It was my post-collegiate confirmation that yes, I still got it!
I know with running those moments are short lived and I had to move on. But I was satisfied enough to keep running 6 days a week. It was a small but memorable victory.
